Discover Greenwich: Discover R.S. Terrazzo

Date Posted: 28 May 2010

Resin Surfaces has supplied over 1,000m2 of Epoxy Terrazzo to the brand new Greenwich Visitor Centre at the Old Royal Naval College.  The specialist flooring manufacturer was able to provide the client’s bespoke colours as well as working with its contractor, Datum Flooring, to meet the tight programme schedule and delivery timings to the very restricted site.

Discover Greenwich at the Old Royal Naval College is a new £6million contemporary cultural venue in the heart of Maritime Greenwich. The new venue includes a restaurant, bar and café and uses state of the art interpretation techniques and rare artefacts in permanent and temporary exhibitions.  The brand new facility required a fresh and modern floor covering of unquestionable durability to withstand the daily foot fall it would receive.

The specification switched specification from another Terrazzo manufacturer to Resin Surfaces for their ability to formulate the client's bespoke colours , and also for their exceptional service and delivery

The tender for the works was received from Crispin & Borst who contracted Datum Flooring to install the floor in three stages to accommodate the fitting of an underfloor heating system. The Terrazzo was laid at 10mm thick, ground and polished down to 8mm and finished with a clear surface dressing of Resupen WB Matt.

R.S. Terrazzo is a four-part component heavy duty epoxy system that contains decorative aggregates, to achieve a very stylish and unique floor finish.  The ornamental surface effect is produced through a mixture of aggregates and stones and other products withing our range consist  aggregate types such as, synthetic, glass and marble. R.S. Terrazzo from its Piazzo range was specified for the centre, a bespoke silver, grey base, with black, grey and white aggregattes, creating an ultra sophisticated and modern appearance – enhancing the overall atmosphere of the centre.

R.S. Terrazzo has exceptional durability and long life expectancy, benefits which were ideally suited to the centre to withstand the daily foot traffic from visitors and staff.  Once installed, R.S. Terrazzo is a seamless floor covering.  Application around corners and curved areas is made simple through the smooth installation process and elimination of any jointing or grouting, making it free from any potential weaknesses.

The striking and unique floor finish certainly helps to create a contemporary atmosphere which was needed for the new build – where the centre is  using advanced technology and exhibits to tell the story of Maritime Greenwich and the Old Royal Naval College.  The decorative elements coupled with the robustness of the R.S. Terrazzo provide a functional yet attractive floor area to host the visitors.
