RSL on a roll with refurbishment of Ireland’s Ball of Naas
Date Posted: 28 January 2010
Specialist resin manufacturer, Resin Surfaces Limited (RSL) has supplied its products for the refurbishment of one of Ireland’s most prominent and unusual landmarks, the Ball of Naas, which is located on the M7 near Dublin.
The 9 metre diameter hollow concrete ball, designed by artists Remco Defow and Rachel Joynt, was first coated with RSL products in 1996. However, heavy road works taking place in close proximity since then has taken its toll on the sculpture, which has been subjected to daily sandblasting with dust and grime.
The spherical shape of the sculpture presented a unique challenge for contractors, Surface Maintenance Systems, who needed to use hoists to apply the resin to the surface of the ball. The sculpture was initially sandblasted, before a coat of Resuseal primer was applied. Four coats of Resutile were then added, before a finish with a final seal coat of Resutile Matt to complete the aesthetic look. Resutile is Light fast, easy to clean and available in a number of attractive colours, Resuseal provided an ideal surface.
The markings on the ball were added using Resutile. The colours were pigmented to the artists’ specifications, using a special black pigment to simulate an asphalt road surface, while Resutile yellow and white were used to replicate road markings.
John O’Connor, at Construction Chemical Supplies, and also part of the project team for the refurbishment, said: “RSL products were chosen not just because they were a roaring success the first time around just over 12 years ago, but because the artists and Kildaire Council can be confident in the knowledge that the Resuseal and Resutile products used are long lasting and have a good degree of colour stability
Ivy Wroe, managing director of Resin Surfaces Limited, commented: “We are delighted to have been involved in such an interesting project, which is testament to the versatility of our materials. It can be used in all sorts of locations and environments and is sometimes overlooked by contractors and specifiers.
“As one of the country’s most well known landmarks, the sculpture is very important to Ireland and we are glad we are able to provide the products to ensure its longevity for many years to come.”
